The idea that Gen Z doesn’t read is largely a misconception; they simply consume text differently. While traditional print book consumption has shifted, this generation consumes vast amounts of written content through digital platforms, social media, and fan fiction. However, certain factors do challenge long-form reading. The “attention economy” plays a major role, as short-form videos on TikTok and YouTube compete for limited free time. Constant digital notifications can also fragment the deep focus required for immersive reading. Furthermore, academic pressure to read for information rather than pleasure can make books feel like a chore. Despite this, the “BookTok” community has sparked a massive resurgence in physical book sales among Gen Z, proving they remain highly engaged and active readers.
