Multi-Sensory Spelling Lesson (V-A-K-T Method)

1. Preparation and Introduction (Rule/Pattern Focus)

  • Teach the Rule (Visual/Auditory): Do not start with the word list itself. Introduce the specific phonics rule or spelling generalization the lesson focuses on (e.g., "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking," or the ck spelling rule).

  • Word Selection: Use the pre-test method (Test-Study-Test) to select only the words from the book's list that the student needs to practice.

2. Phoneme-Grapheme Mapping (Auditory/Kinesthetic)

This step connects the sounds (phonemes) to the written letters (graphemes) using a tactile or visual manipulative.

  • Segment the Word (Auditory/Tactile): Say the spelling word aloud. Have the student repeat it and then tap out each individual sound (phoneme) on their fingers or on a counter/block.

    • Example: C-A-K-E is sounded out as /k/ /ā/ /k/ (3 sounds). The student taps three times.

  • Map/Graph the Word (Kinesthetic/Visual): Use Elkonin boxes (drawn on paper) or a similar manipulative.

    • The student places a counter for each sound tapped in the box.

    • Then, they write the corresponding letter or letter group (grapheme) for that sound into the box. This makes the student explicitly connect a sound to its spelling, even for tricky groups like.
