What is the 50 page rule?

The 50-page rule is a popular strategy used by bibliophiles to manage their time and enjoyment while reading. The rule suggests that you should give every book a chance for exactly fifty pages. If the book has not captured your interest or provided value by that point, you are “allowed” to stop reading it without feeling guilty. This rule acknowledges that life is too short to spend on books that do not resonate with you. Interestingly, some versions of this rule suggest that as you get older, you should subtract your age from 100 to find your personal page limit. For example, a 70-year-old only needs to give a book 30 pages. It encourages purposeful, joyful reading over completion for completion’s sake.
